#54 - Is it time to make your next career move?
26 Mar 25
Knowing when to make a career move is something that vexes most people. It involves upheaval, uncertainty and there is most definitely a sense of stepping into the unknown.
There are undoubtedly some metrics to measure your situation against. But ultimately the key question to ask yourself relates to whether you are still earning and learning. The sweet spot is achieving both. But either/or is also fine.
Trust your instincts - you will know when it is the right time to move on.

#54 - Is it time to make your next career move?
What?
It never fails to surprise me how readily people embrace and take comfort in the status quo. What I mean by that is that when they join an organisation and then 'settle in', career complacency starts to creep in and they almost 'sub-contract' out their career management to the organisation itself.
And that is ok if the organisation that you are a part of keeps its side of the bargain. But if it doesn't, or it doesn't rate you as someone who has potential, then a decision ultimately has to be made.
Why?
Knowing when to move to a new role is one of the most critical decisions in your career. Stay too long, and you risk stagnation. Move too soon, and you might miss valuable growth opportunities.
You're almost caught between a rock and a hard place. Do you consolidate your position within the Company and stay where you are?
Or do you try and push your performance envelope and forge ahead with new challenges?
The choice is even more difficult if you are in a role where you are very comfortable, the money is great (and therefore increasingly becomes easy money) but the professional growth is non-existent. In this case your enemy is sheer boredom and lack of stimulus.
But when decision-time comes, before making a leap, ensure you have a clear plan.
How?
Here are some signs it may be time for a change:
-
Lack of growth: If your skills, learning, or opportunities have plateaued, a new challenge may be what you need. There is a lot to be said about the sweet spot in any organisation being where you are able to be earning and/or learning. Both is preferable. But either one is fine. When that stops, that is a clear indicator to move.
-
No alignment with your goals: If your current role no longer aligns with your long-term aspirations, it may be time to pivot. Remember that your preferred career path may be at odds with where your Company needs are leading you.
-
Burnout or disengagement: A lack of motivation, energy, or enthusiasm can indicate it’s time to explore new opportunities. Do you still believe in the Company and what it is trying to achieve? Do you still feel that you have a sense of purpose and are contributing/adding value?
-
Company culture or leadership mismatch: If you’re feeling disconnected from the Company’s values or leadership style, it could be a sign to move on. Always remember that your personal and professional integrity are non-negotiable.
Either way, if you are looking to move try to define what you want next, research potential opportunities, and leverage the power of your network.
Finally, in terms of networking it's not who you know...it's who knows you!
