#7 - Establishing your brand!
13 Apr 24
Effective leaders are aware of two maxims; 'Perception is reality' and 'Reputations are hard won, but just as easily lost'.
They carefully craft their reputations or personal brand over time. These are based upon consistency in multiple areas.
The best way to establish your brand is to focus on consistency of behaviours, quality of output, timely delivery and achieve a track record of continual success over time. This ensures the experience of working with you is the same on each occasion, and this allows expectations to be met.
This drives the presentation of more opportunities as your track record grows. Over time, your brand will be consolidated.

#7 - Establishing your brand!
What?
There are certain products that I repeatably buy because I know that I will get exactly what I have paid for. If I buy a particular brand the experience will more than likely be the same every time.
Consequently, I will feel that the level of quality has met my expectations. This realisation has come about through hard won experience and experimentation conducted in the past which has cost me money. I frequently tried other products which purported to offer the same 'product experience'. Every time I tried to 'buy cheap' I ended up 'buying twice' and was consequently disappointed.
It's the same with leaders. People like to work with others that meet a certain expectation. There are no surprises, stress levels are reduced and you can predict what the outcome is likely to be.
Why?
It's all to do with reputation, alternatively known as 'Brand'. Effective leaders spend a lot of time and effort in building their professional reputation or brand. Those with a good reputation become associated with a lower degree of risk, and so colleagues perceive them as people who are a 'safe pair of hands' who are able to get things done. Aways at the back of their minds is the maxim that 'Reputations are hard won, but easily lost'.
As a result of this, opportunities will be regularly presented to those with a good reputation. Those who get the job done, those who are reliable and who consistently deliver to a high standard are the ones that see repeat business.
This is what drives them to strive for excellence.
How?
Effective leaders are meticulous in crafting their reputation in terms of consistency. That is, consistency related to behaviours, quality of output, delivery to time and of continual success. They build up a track record across multiple delivery areas which is the evidential trail to support their brand positioning. They care deeply about their output and perception of it by others.
They are also very selective in the roles that they take on, aware of their own strengths and limitations. This knowledge effectively ensures that they proactively set themselves up for success prior to accepting any role.
In Summary
I hope that you enjoyed reading this newsletter and that it has given you food for thought.
Establishing a good brand is absolutely key for a leader. You want your name to be associated with a consistency of success based upon behaviours, quality of output and timely delivery.
Your track record will then allow you to build your reputation on sound foundations which in turn will continue to consolidate and grow over time.
Have a great week!
