But, what most people don't realise is that the nature of your leadership style has to change as your career unfolds and the environments in which you operate change.

Leaders tend to move away from the 'General' style of leadership (task-orientated, directed), and move more towards the 'Diplomat' (collaborative, influencing) style the more senior they become.

Additionally, as you become more senior the proportion of time required to be spent leading people, compared to dealing purely with technical/niche issues, increases (see diagram below).

And finally, you will change as a person as you mature in age. So all of these reasons combine to drive you to continually work at developing and refining your own style.

Leadership experience and expertise is built up over many years, and learning to do it effectively is therefore necessarily a life-long activity.
